Among the Maui Film Festival honorees is Christina Ricci of Yellowjackets

The Maui Film Festival today announced its 2022 award winners for the 22nd annual event, taking place July 6-10 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului.

The five-day festival celebrates the art of storytelling, with an emphasis on compassionate seeing and transformative storytelling, and includes honors for awardees. This year’s award winners are:

  • Nova Prize – Christina Ricci: The Nova Award recognizes an actress whose original and seamless performances consistently infuse each character they portray with unique insight, humanity and wisdom.

Ricci is currently starring on Showtime’s hit series. Yellow jackets. She has also worked with many prolific filmmakers such as Tim Burton (The Addams family), Lana Wachowski (speed racers and The Matrix Resurrections) and Patty Jenkins (monster).

She has received critical acclaim in her various roles including Ang Lee The ice storm and Don Roos’ The opposite of sex, for the latter she won a Best Actress award at the Seattle Film Festival for her performance. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, an American Comedy Award, and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress for her work in the film.

On television, Ricci received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2006 for her performance in Grey’s anatomy. She was also nominated for a 2016 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie for her performance in The Chronicles by Lizzie Borden.


Off-screen, Ricci serves as the national spokesperson for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) and serves on the organization’s National Leadership Council.

  • Stella Award—Lana Condor: She stars in the blockbuster franchise To all the boys I’ve loved before, to all the boys, always and forever and to all the boys, PS I still love you. The Stella Award recognizes an actress for advancing the status of women throughout the film industry by bringing characters to life that empower, enlighten and entertain.

Condor’s include additional film credits moonshot with Zach Braff and Cole Sprouse, Alita: Battle Angel opposite Rosa Salazar and Mahershala Ali, Patriot’s Day alongside Mark Wahlberg and X-Men: Apocalypse. She will next be seen in Warner Bros. Pictures alongside John Cena and Will Forte. Coyote vs AcmeRelease in July 2023.

Condor uses her platform to raise awareness for causes close to her heart, including The Asia Foundation, where she set up a scholarship to send disadvantaged girls and women in Vietnam to school. She recently traveled back to Vietnam with the Girls Opportunity Alliance through the Obama Foundation, along with Michelle Obama and Julia Roberts, to share stories about people working for girls’ education there.

  • Rising Prize – Jayme Lawson: She is a Warner Bros. and DC Films breakout star. The Batman and the Showtime anthology series The First Lady. The Rising Star Award honors an artist for abundant creativity to support honest and life-changing art. Previous Maui Film Festival Rising Star honorees include Brie Larson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel and Garrett Hedlund.

Lawson will next star in TriStar PicturesThe Woman King starring Viola Davis and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. She will also appear in MGM’s until for director Chinonye Chukwu and producer Barbara Broccoli. Both films are slated for release in September.


Lawson’s feature film debut Ekwa Msangi Farewell Cupid, premiered in the 2020 US Dramatic Competition at Sundance and was selected for release by IFC Films. Lawson was featured as one of the festival’s runaways by LA Times and Variety and cited for her “inhabited, flawless performance.” Variety also named her one of their 2020 10 Actors to Watch.

Lawson graduated from Juilliard with a BFA in 2019 and received that year’s Laura Pels award, Juilliard’s best acting award.

  • Rainmaker Award—Stacy Peralta: He is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. The Rainmaker Award recognizes a filmmaker for the magical ability to affect the dynamics of every project they touch, both on and off screen.

Peralta is best known for being a member of Z-Boys, founder of the skateboard company Powell-Peralta and its award-winning documentary Dogtown and Z Boys. his latest movie The Yin & Yang by Gerry Lopezwill premiere at the Maui Film Festival.

  • Visionary Award – Gerry Lopez: The Patagonia Surf Ambassador will receive the Visionary Award, which recognizes a filmmaker for his long-standing commitment to inspiring and nurturing the endlessly evolving tapestry of global cultures into an ever more compassionate and life-affirming planetary community.
