LOS ANGELES, 29 Dec 2021 / PRNewswire / – Discovery Behavioral Health, Inc., a growing nationwide network of evidence-based centers for mental health, drug use and eating disorders treatment, has the appointment of Andrea Piazza as Director of Virtual Programming, reporting to Alexa Baghdassarian, LMFT, VP of Operations.
In her new role, Piazza will oversee all virtual programming for DBH’s 130 treatment centers in 12 states. She brings a diverse mental health background that spans working as a therapist, entrepreneur, activist, performing artist, and writer. She was the founder and owner of Inclusive Impact Therapy, a mental health provider in Orlando, Florida., with a commitment to diversity and inclusion recognized as “Best Mental Health Practice” by Orlando Weekly Magazine in 2021.
She has a masters degree from University of Central Florida in clinical psychosocial counseling and bachelor’s degrees in psychology and dance University of Florida. Trained as a dancer, she often uses creativity in her work with patients and shapes both her work as a movement artist and as a scientific researcher.
Piazza’s position was recreated by DBH and reflects the vendor’s commitment to expanding its burgeoning remote programming during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide therapeutic services to home segregated patients. In her new role, she wants to reach new patients and interact with existing patients in new ways.
“Before the pandemic, virtual programming and telemedicine were generally seen as a last resort. Fortunately, what we have found is that virtual programming offers unique advantages over existing treatment protocols, including patients whose physical or socio-economic profile makes it difficult for them to use inpatient or even outpatient programs. These patients could include those with compromised immunity or a stay-at-home parent with young children, “says Piazza.
In addition to improved access and convenience, virtual programming opens the door to rethinking existing therapies and developing new ones.
“There is a promise to use technology in new ways, including artificial intelligence and data management. For example, there are patients who might benefit from group therapy but who resist the face-to-face encounters traditionally required. But with online technology, you could create a safe environment where questions could be asked of a group, where participants would respond through a chat room, “she says.
Data management and AI could be used to more effectively track patients as they recover after treatment.
Finally, Piazza points out the advantage of virtual programming in that it has no geographical boundaries, and envisions how guest speakers with a certain expertise can advise patients individually or as a group regardless of their location.
“Andrea’s creative background and mental health experience will be of use as we leverage the power of virtual programming to deliver effective and comprehensive treatment for all who need it, regardless of where they live or their personal circumstances. We all at DBH share their enthusiasm for the potential that new technologies offer for behavioral health programs, “says Baghdassarian.
