Former PC Athletic Director and Big East Commissioner, John M. Marinatto, Dies,

John M. Marinatto, 63, of Lincoln, died suddenly on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Rhode Island Hospital.

Born in Providence, he was previously deceased to his parents John and Edith (Calise) Marinatto. He leaves behind his beloved brother, Peter Marinatto, of West Warwick, and several cousins.

In 1979 he graduated from Providence College. During his studies he worked for the basketball head coach as the team manager of the men’s basketball team. Upon graduation, he served as Sports Information Director and was named Vice President / Director of Athletics in 1987.

In his role, he ran a 21 sports division where he influenced the lives and careers of countless student athletes, coaches, and administrators during and after their days at PC. In many ways, the Providence College family became John’s lifelong passion. He worked tirelessly and was to be found at his desk day and night. His love and commitment to Providence College was endless, leading his colleagues to discover that “John bleeds black and white” are the colors of the college he loved so much.

In 2000, John became Senior Associate Commissioner of the Big East Conference, followed by Commissioner, overseeing its expansion. He has served on many of the most prestigious NCAA committees, including the NCAA Management & Leadership Council and the Business and Finance Cabinet. For the past several years, John has served as the special assistant to the Commissioner for the Colonial Athletic Association.

Funeral from the Nardolillo Funeral Home & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston, Monday at 10 a.m., followed by a Christian funeral mass at St. Mary’s Church, Cranston at 11 a.m.

Prayers of engagement will take place immediately after mass in St. Ann Cemetery in Cranston.

Visiting hours are on Monday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
